Malmö has added a new wine bar, located in Malmö old town district Gamla Väster – Julie
Julie is quite unpretentious but highly qualitative. Much attention is given to detail here – and very much attention to good produce. The owners behind Julie also own Hörte Brygga in Skivarp in the south of Skåne – also very well worth a visit. The team working at Julie almost all have had a history of working at Bastard – Malmö’s much hyped hipster restaurant as featured in Vogue et al. And just as is the case with Bastard everything here feels very genuine.
Julie however, focuses on wine. There really is no need for a wine list here, it’s more about the dialogue with your waiter that picks out what you need – to go with your mood, your taste or with whatever you’re eating. The bar is centered around a kitchen island where all the food is prepared. We’ve tried the charcuteries as well as sallads and cheese and everything here is quite formidable. It’s not much, the menu is not big and you don’t come here to have a traditional three course dinner. You come here for the wine, the ambiance and the tender love and care given to the dishes they serve. You order one, then the next and then the next. In the summer there is also a very cosy and somewhat romantic courtyard to hang out in.
No table reservations – just pop by and they’ll do their best to squeeze you in. Julie is a great place to go after end of business, with friends and colleagues, to conclude your day. Or come here to have a looooong lunch with a friend and get a bit tipsy in the afternoon.
Julie serves hot food straight from their own rotisserie but you can also choose a salad with the left overs from yesterdays rotisserie – highly recommended. Delicious and super fresh! Don’t expect anything on the menu here to be constant, all depends on the produce available, the time of year and the chefs’ taste of the day. You’ll find rutabaga, celeriac, pork side, rabbit, delicious chickens and on wednesdays they go for oysters as long as supplies last.
But this really is the perfect place to just chill in the middle of the city, with a glass of rosé in the sun. Get a single glass, a full bottle or a pichet of wine. Affordable, delicious and relaxing. Everyone who works here is basically nerdy when it comes to wine knowledge so just describe what you like and there will be a good choice made for you. Julie has their own tempered wine room and all wines can be purchased by the glass.
Cheese is also a speciality of Julie’s who serve cheeses from Androuet Stockholm as well as from regional Ådala Gård in Skåne. Good to know is that you also can order all of it take away – in terms of ready dishes as well as cheese and charcuteries. Or why not order a picnic box?
After a few visits we really love the addition of Julie to the Malmö food & wine scene. Julie is a really nice addition – we’ll be coming back often!
Wow, den vinbaren måste vi testa nästa gång jag är i Malmö. Den låter super!
Den är verkligen värd ett besök! Säg till när du/ni är i stan så hänger vi på!
